In lactation period women referring to dentistry are worry about practices, material and drugs in lactation. Before entering details, it should be emphasize that in lactation period, dental treatment aspects, including anesthetics and analgesics prescribed, anti -inflammatory drugs and even antibiotics do not interfere lactation. It’s not necessary for mother to deprive child from her milk because of baby health.

Considerations of lactating mothers in referring to dentistry:

  1. Amalgam restorations should not be changed during breast feeding. However, studies have shown that the amount of mercury released in mother milk is modest during replacement of amalgam restoration and is less than the amount of mercury absorption, but to cure any possible risk, treatments such as replacing amalgam to tooth in some color material can be postpone.
  2. There is no forbidden on the use of topical anesthetic during breast feeding baby. Of course, epinephrine is partially capable of secretion breast milk. Therefore, anesthesia lack of epinephrine can resolve this concern for epinephrine.

  3. Toothpaste and mouthwashes do not enter the milk for normal use and do not cause any problem. The amount of material ingestion inside body cannot be detected.

  4. No dental diagnostic process interferes with breast feeding. X-rays include periapical radiography, panoramic and even CBCT, biopsies, ultrasonic; pulp tester… has no problem in lactation process.

  5. Normal analgesics do not interfere with breast feeding less than one or two percent of medication may enter to breast feed. Simple acetaminophen is first choice for dentist during lactation. But the use of ibuprofen, corticosteroids such as prednisone, does not pose danger according to many pharmacists. It is recommended that medications be taken immediately after breast feeding, so the maximum time to next breast feeding increases.
  6. It’s better for lactating mothers to don’t use antibiotics, generally antibiotics are not widely used in dentistry. If necessary, pregnant women can use amoxicillin and metronidazole. Do not use aspirin while breast feeding? Opiate and opioid drugs should not be used drugs should not be used during lactation. Ibuprofen can be used as an effective analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent in the short term during lactation.

  7. Bleaching treatment doesn’t pose a risk to the infant. But if is recommended unnecessary , selective treatment post pone.

  8. Breast feeding doesn’t reduce the calcium of tooth or tooth cavity. Often due to oral and teeth problems during pregnancy, we may attribute dental problems to breast feeding. But we should emphasize that breast feeding doesn’t have any relevant with softening, caries or decay of tooth.
